Vermiculite, Magnesium Aluminum Iron Silicate
Categories: Ceramic; Oxide; Magnesium Oxide; Silicon Oxide

Material Notes: Vermiculite is the name given to one of several hydrous laminar minerals. When heated, vermiculite expands (exfoliates) due to the pressure of escaping steam. Control of the exfoliation conditions allows the properties of the exfoliated product to be controlled to suit specific applications. Exfoliated vermiculite is a very absorbent material - water or other liquids can be absorbed in the atomic level layers.

Vermiculite is found worldwide. The properties reported below are from the Phalaborwa deposit.
